The adventure of John the Crazy is but a modest episode in the long and bloody war between France and Spain on Italian soil, which started at the end of the 15th century and ended with the Peace of Cambrai the 8th of August 1529. Never had we lunched with a host threatened by a violent death, on an island cursed since the 12th century. Nor had we before joined a post-lunch exorcism. Isola Comacina, the tiny enchanting island in the middle of Italy's picture-perfect Lake Como, was uninhabited for centuries. People were frightened away when highly regarded poet, the Cumano wrote: 'Island, cursed be thou throughout the ages!'"
