Jennifer Grimwade discovers a delicious tradition on a tiny island steeped in superstition.

Never had we lunched with a host threatened by a violent death, on an island cursed since the 12th century. Nor had we before joined a post-lunch exorcism. Isola Comacina, the tiny enchanting island in the middle of Italy's picture-perfect Lake Como, was uninhabited for centuries. People were frightened away when highly regarded poet, the Cumano wrote: 'Island, cursed be thou throughout the ages!'"
