Lake Como or Lake Michigan
Vero per il Lago di Como per il Michgan mi fido, non ci sono mai stato..."Lago Como is a gorgeous swath of water and for those of you used to Lake Michigan this is something wholly different. In fact, I think Como would be promptly refused entry in the "Great Lakes" region for being simply too quaint and charming. Whereas Lake Michigan is a conquering sort of lake that leaves no trace of land on the other side, Como is a lake that is happy to feature picturesque views of everything on the other side... colorful towns, rising hills and blue skies all around."

And there is nothing quite like Lake Como, which Shelley called the most beautiful place in the world. Stendhal used it as background for his "The Charterhouse of Parma," and it was an inspiration to Byron, Flaubert and Wordsworth. Virgil called it the "greatest" lake. It's good enough for me, too.

The Seattle Times: Travel Outdoors: Life is romantically good at Italy's Lake Como
The Seattle Times: Travel Outdoors: Life is romantically good at Italy's Lake Como: "Life is romantically good at Italy's Lake Como
Stretched over two chairs atop the tiny passenger deck of a 10-car ferry as it shuttles across Lake Como, I look south into the haze of Italy. I'm savoring the best of my favorite country with none of the chaos and intensity that's generally part of the Italian experience."
